What to expect from an AI screening interview
If an employer has asked you to complete an AI screening, here is what it is, how to do your best, and what your rights are. Every candidate deserves an equal opportunity - that starts with knowing what's happening.
What it is
An AI screening is a short conversation - usually a few minutes - about the job you applied for. It asks about your experience, your availability and anything your CV doesn't make clear. The employer reads a transcript and summary of your answers. With BeCareers, the AI doesn't reject anyone on its own judgement. A person at the employer reviews your answers, unless the employer has set an automatic rule for a must-have - for example, a licence the job legally needs. Employers must tell you about those rules, and you can contest the outcome and ask for a person to review it.
How to do well
- Choose your language. You can usually answer in the language you're most comfortable with. BeCareers supports 100+.
- Find a quiet moment. You can do it when it suits you - evenings and weekends are fine.
- Have your details to hand. Dates, licences, certificates and the shifts you can work.
- Be specific. Real examples - "I did early shifts picking 150 items an hour" - say more than general statements.
- Be honest. If you haven't done something, say so and say what you'd do. Employers check licences and references later.
Your rights
- To be told. Employers should tell you when AI is used in their recruitment.
- To a person. If a decision about you is made solely by automated means, you can ask for a person to review it. If you are disabled, you can ask for reasonable adjustments, such as another way to be screened.
- To your data. You can ask the employer what data they hold about you, ask them to correct or delete it, and withdraw your application.
- To be treated fairly. Employers generally can't ask about your health before a job offer, except in narrow cases, and mustn't base decisions on your age, religion, pregnancy or family plans. Diversity monitoring questions may appear on a separate, optional form.
